Behind the Lens: A Day in the Life of a Bathurst Photographer

Ever wondered what a day in the life of a photographer actually looks like? Spoiler — it’s not all clicking shutters and sipping coffee (though both are pretty essential).
Being a photographer means switching between creative, business owner, storyteller, and sometimes therapist — all in one day. Here’s a peek behind the lens at what a typical day looks like for me, Maddi Lee, in Bathurst and across the Central West NSW.
☀️ Morning: Calm, coffee & creative prep
My day always starts with an English breakfast tea (with honey, of course) and a slow moment before the chaos begins.
Then it’s emails, gear checks, and planning the day’s sessions — whether that’s a branding shoot in town, a newborn snuggle session, or a golden-hour wedding in the hills.
If I’m not heading out to shoot, mornings are for editing — hair up, playlist on, and Lightroom open. It’s when I dive back into the stories I captured the day before.
💻 Midday: Business brain mode
Photography might look glamorous, but behind the scenes it’s full of organisation. I spend my afternoons doing:
Gallery culls and sneak peeks
Prepping client guides & timelines
Emails, contracts, and planning sessions
Updating my blog (hi 👋) and social posts
I love this part because it’s where the experience comes together — clear communication, easy systems, and a touch of Maddi-coded excitement.
✨ Afternoon: Out in the magic
This is my favourite time of day — shooting sessions in that dreamy Bathurst light.
Golden hour hits different out here. Whether I’m capturing a couple in Sunny Corner, a family giggling in a paddock, or a branding client downtown, every session is built around connection.
No stiff poses, no forced smiles — just natural movement, laughter, and the real stuff that makes you you.
🌙 Evening: Editing, storytelling & reflection
Once I’m back home, it’s time to back up memory cards (twice — because safety first) and start piecing together the story from the day.
Editing is where the magic happens. I relive every laugh, every look, every candid moment — and bring it all to life in warm, true-to-colour tones. It’s late nights, a lot of tea, and a whole lot of heart.
❤️ Why I love what I do
Every day is different, but every story matters. Whether it’s the chaos of a wedding morning, a quiet newborn cuddle, or a couple running barefoot through a field, I get to freeze time for people.
And honestly? There’s nothing better.
