Let’s be honest — family photos with kids can feel like herding cats sometimes 🐈⬛. But that’s also what makes them real, fun, and full of personality.
As a Bathurst family photographer, I’ve learned that the best photos happen when everyone feels relaxed (especially the little ones). Here’s how to prepare your kids so your next family session feels easy and fun.
1. Talk about it beforehand
Tell your kids you’re going to hang out, play, and have some fun — not “stand still for photos.” Setting positive expectations helps them feel comfortable and excited rather than pressured.
2. Dress them comfortably
Choose outfits that fit well and allow movement. Avoid itchy fabrics or tight shoes. Happy kids = happy photos. Soft colours, layers, and simple textures photograph beautifully.
3. Bring their favourites
Snacks, a drink, a favourite toy, or blanket can save the day. Having familiar things nearby helps kids relax and gives us little props for genuine smiles.
4. Let them be kids
Don’t worry if they run, jump, or get silly — that’s where the magic happens! Lifestyle family photography is all about capturing personality, not perfection.
5. Timing matters
If your child usually naps or eats at a certain time, schedule around it. Late afternoon (golden hour) is perfect for light — but if mornings work better for your crew, we’ll make that work.
6. Keep it short + sweet
I design sessions to move quickly and keep energy high. We’ll mix play with short breaks so no one gets overwhelmed.
7. Celebrate afterward
Whether it’s ice cream, dinner out, or just playtime at home, plan something fun after the session. It makes the experience memorable and helps kids associate photos with good vibes.
My approach with families
I’ll guide you with easy prompts, not stiff poses — think tickle fights, cuddles, and exploring. The goal is for you to enjoy being together while I capture the real moments in between.
