Booking a photoshoot is exciting — but the question I get asked the most is: “What should we wear?”
The good news? It’s not about buying a whole new wardrobe. It’s about feeling like you while choosing outfits that photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your connection. In this guide, I’ll share my best tips (as a photographer who has seen it all!) to help you get ready with confidence.
Choosing outfits that photograph well
✨ Keep it simpleSolid colours or subtle patterns work best. Avoid big logos, neon, or anything super busy — they can distract from your faces and connection.
✨ Coordinate, don’t matchThink complementary tones (like earthy neutrals, soft pastels, or jewel tones). Avoid being too matchy-matchy (everyone in jeans + white tees).
✨ Comfort is keyIf you feel good in it, it will show in your photos. Can you move, sit, or dance in it? That’s what matters most.
✨ Textures add magicFlowy dresses, linen shirts, knit jumpers — these add dimension without stealing attention.
Family session tips
👶 For little ones: choose soft, comfy outfits in breathable fabrics. Bring a backup outfit (just in case).👩👩👧 If you’re a family, pick 2–3 colours and mix them across everyone’s outfits.💡 Keep snacks, wipes, and a favourite toy handy. Happy kids = happy photos.
Couple & engagement sessions
For couples, I recommend:
One dressier outfit (flowy dress, button-up shirt, boots)
One casual outfit (jeans + cosy knit, sneakers)
This gives variety in your gallery while still feeling natural.
Newborn & at-home sessions
At-home sessions are all about comfort and intimacy. Neutral tones work beautifully against most home backdrops. Soft, simple clothing (like a cotton tee or a wrap dress) ensures baby is the star of the show.
Extra prep tips
📸 Bring layers – jackets, hats, or accessories can change the look without a full outfit swap.📸 Plan for movement – think twirls, piggybacks, sitting on the ground. Choose clothes that allow for fun.
📸 Relax – prep is important, but don’t overthink. It’s about your connection, not perfection.
What not to worry about
Small creases or flyaways — I’ve got tricks to fix those.
Posing perfectly — I’ll guide you the whole way.
Kids being kids — sometimes the cheeky, imperfect moments make the best photos.
Final checklist before your shoot
✅ Outfits chosen (coordinated, not matched)✅ Hair & makeup prepped (optional, but helps you feel polished)✅ Snacks, water, wipes packed if you have kids✅ Props or sentimental items ready (blanket, guitar, flowers, etc.)✅ A “go with the flow” mindset 💫
Ready for your session?
