How to Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera on Your Wedding Day
Updated: May 18

A Guide for Couples Who Think “We’re Awkward in Photos”
Let me guess.
You’re excited to get married…but the second someone mentions couples photos, your soul quietly leaves your body.
You start thinking:
“We’re so awkward.”“We don’t know how to pose.”“My partner would rather fight a bear than take photos.”“What do I even do with my hands?”
Honestly?Completely normal.
Almost every couple says this.
And I need you to know something important:
You are not supposed to know how to do this.
You’re not professional models. You’re two people in love trying to plan a wedding without losing your minds.
That’s enough.
As a wedding photographer in Bathurst and across Central West NSW, one of the biggest parts of my job isn’t actually taking photos.
It’s creating a space where you feel comfortable enough to just be yourselves.
Because the best photos don’t happen when you perform perfectly.
They happen when you forget the camera is even there.
Let’s talk about how.
First: You Do Not Need to “Be Good at Photos”
This is the biggest myth.
People think some couples are just naturally photogenic and everyone else has been cursed by the camera gods.
Not true.
The couples you think look “natural” usually just felt safe enough to relax.
That’s it.
Natural photos are not about knowing poses.
They’re about connection.
You laughing.Talking.Walking.Being slightly annoying to each other.Stealing kisses.Running around like chaos merchants.
That’s what photographs beautifully.
Not standing stiffly like you’re posing for your passport photo.
Nobody wants romance with passport energy.
My Job Is to Guide You the Entire Time
You will never be left standing there thinking:
“…cool, now what?”
Absolutely not.
I guide everything.
I’ll prompt you.Move you.Fix the weird hand thing.Tell you where to stand.Give you something to do so it never feels awkward.
You are not expected to invent romance on command.
That would be unfair and frankly weird.
Instead of stiff posing, I use movement and prompts.
Things like:
walk together
whisper something ridiculous
forehead kisses
spin her around
sneak attack hugs
“tell him your KFC order and why it reveals your personality”
Okay maybe not that exact one.But honestly… maybe.
The goal is interaction, not perfection.
Your Partner Doesn’t Have to “Love Photos”
This one matters.
A lot of people worry because one person is excited and the other person would rather disappear into the bush.
Usually the groom.Let’s be honest.
That is so normal.
Your partner does not need to love photos.
They just need to love you.
That’s enough.
The session is not about performing for the camera.
It’s about spending intentional time together while I quietly document it.
Most people leave saying:
“That was way easier than I expected.”
Which is elite feedback, honestly.
Engagement Sessions Help So Much
This is one of the reasons I love engagement sessions.
They take all the mystery out of wedding photos.
You get to:
meet me properly
understand how I work
get comfortable being photographed
learn how relaxed it actually feels
stop panicking about wedding portraits
By the time the wedding arrives, you already know what to expect.
No weird surprises.No stress.
Just confidence.
And better photos because of it.
Outfit Confidence Matters Too
If you feel uncomfortable in what you’re wearing, it shows.
You do not need the fanciest outfit on earth.
You need something that feels like you.
Something you can move in.Something you feel confident in.Something that doesn’t make you spend the entire session adjusting your shirt or questioning your life choices.
Comfort creates confidence.
Confidence creates better photos.
Simple.
And yes, I help with outfit guidance too.
Because I refuse to let beige linen become your villain origin story.
Stop Chasing Pinterest Perfection
Please.
Pinterest is lovely for inspiration, but terrible for self-inflicted pressure.
You do not need your photos to look like someone else’s relationship.
You need them to feel like yours.
Your laugh.Your weirdness.Your quiet moments.Your chaos.
That matters more than copying a pose from strangers standing in Iceland.
You live in Bathurst, not on a glacier.
Let’s stay grounded.
The Best Photos Happen In Between
The real magic is never the perfect pose.
It’s the in-between.
The laugh after the kiss. The hand squeeze. The way your partner looks at you when you’re not paying attention. The ridiculous joke that makes you both lose it.
That’s what you’ll care about later.
Not whether your elbow was at a 47-degree angle.
Nobody is framing elbow geometry.
They’re framing feeling.
My Advice Before Your Wedding Day
Here’s what actually helps:
Trust your photographer
If you’ve chosen someone whose work you love, let them lead.
That trust changes everything.
Focus on each other, not the camera
Your job is not to perform.
It’s to be present.
Look at each other more than you look at me.
Always.
Let go of perfect
Perfect is boring.
Real is better.
Every time.
Give yourself permission to enjoy it
This matters.
Photos should not feel like another task on your wedding checklist.
They should feel like a pause.
A chance to breathe together.
That energy changes everything.
Final Thoughts
You do not need to know how to pose.
You do not need to be “good at photos.”
You do not need to become a completely different person for your wedding day.
You just need to show up as yourselves.
I’ll handle the rest.
That’s the whole point.
Your photos should feel like your relationship.
Not like a performance.
And honestly?
That’s where the good stuff lives.
Looking for a Wedding Photographer in Bathurst or Central West NSW?
If you want photos that feel relaxed, candid, romantic, and actually like you—not stiff posing and awkward fake smiles—I’d love to help.
My job is making this easy.
And maybe making your partner admit they actually enjoyed photos.
That’s my favourite plot twist.
