How to Prepare Your Kids for a Family Photo Session (Without the Stress)

A Family Photographer’s Honest Guide for Parents Who Are Slightly Panicking

Let’s start here:

Your kids do not need to be perfectly behaved for family photos.

Actually, if they are suspiciously well-behaved, I’ll probably be concerned.

Family sessions are not about perfect smiles, folded hands, and children standing like tiny corporate employees.

They are about connection.

The cuddles. The chaos. The running. The snack negotiations. The toddler who absolutely refuses shoes because apparently that’s their personal brand now.

That is real life.

That is what you’ll want to remember.

As a family photographer in Bathurst and across Central West NSW, one of the biggest worries parents have before a session is:

“What if my kids don’t cooperate?”

And my honest answer?

They probably won’t.

And that is completely fine.

Because the best family photos usually happen in the in-between moments, not in perfect posing.

Let’s talk about how to make your session feel easier, calmer, and way less stressful.

First: Lower the Pressure Immediately

This matters most.

If you walk into your family session expecting your kids to behave perfectly for an hour while smiling on command…

respectfully, you are setting yourself up for emotional damage.

Kids are tiny humans, not trained event staff.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is genuine connection.

Laughing.Playing.Holding hands.Tickle fights. The little moments that actually feel like your family.

The less pressure everyone feels, the better the session goes.

Including you.

Especially you.

Because children can smell parental stress from several suburbs away.

Talk About the Session Beforehand

Do not surprise your children with:

“Get in the car, we are taking photos now.”

That energy rarely ends beautifully.

Instead, talk about it like something fun.

Tell them:

  • we’re going on an adventure

  • we’re going to play

  • we’re hanging out together

  • there may be snacks involved

Set the tone early.

If they think it’s a punishment disguised as family bonding, we have already lost.

Please Do Not Bribe Them Into Smiling

I know.

I know.

The temptation is strong.

“If you smile nicely, I’ll buy you chocolate.”

But here’s what often happens:

You accidentally create a tiny negotiator with unreasonable demands and the legal confidence of a corporate lawyer.

Now they want a pony.

Instead, focus on making the session feel playful.

Movement works better than pressure.

Games work better than demands.

Connection works better than bribery.

Also… I have tricks.

I promise.

Timing Matters More Than People Realise

Please do not book family photos at the exact time your toddler usually transforms into a tiny emotional dragon.

We respect nap schedules here.

We fear overtired children.

Golden hour is beautiful, yes—but if your child turns into a full political uprising after 6pm, we adjust.

The best session time is the one where your kids are happiest.

Not just the one Pinterest likes.

Sometimes that means sunrise.

Sometimes that means bribing your own schedule.

Worth it.

Bring Snacks (But Choose Wisely)

Snacks are your friend.

Messy snacks are your enemy.

We are aiming for:

  • dry snacks

  • quick snacks

  • non-staining snacks

We are not bringing:

  • chocolate

  • bright red Zooper Doopers

  • anything that could end with “why is that on your shirt?”

Tiny crackers? Elite.

Sticky fruit pouch chaos? Risky.

Choose peace.

Choose Comfortable Outfits

If your child hates what they’re wearing, everyone will know.

Immediately.

Outfits should feel comfortable, easy to move in, and like your family.

Not stiff. Not itchy. Not “Mum said wear this and now I’m filing an emotional complaint.”

Neutral tones photograph beautifully, but honestly, comfort wins every time.

Because confidence looks better than perfection.

And yes, I help with outfit guidance too.

No panic required.

Let Them Be Themselves

This is the big one.

Please do not spend the whole session saying:

“Smile properly.”“Stand still.”“Stop doing that weird thing.”

Sometimes the weird thing is the best photo.

Sometimes the running photo becomes your favourite.

Sometimes the cuddly meltdown photo means more than the smiling one.

Let kids be kids.

That’s where the magic lives.

Real always wins.

Your Energy Sets the Tone

This one matters.

If you are stressed, rushed, or quietly fighting for your life, your kids feel it.

Try to treat the session like a family date, not a performance review.

Laugh.Play.Be present.

The more relaxed you are, the easier it is for them to relax too.

You do not need to perform for me.

You just need to love your people.

That part, you already know how to do.

My Approach During Family Sessions

I do not expect your children to stand still and smile for 45 minutes.

That sounds like a human rights issue.

I use prompts, games, movement, and a lot of flexibility.

We walk.We play.We cuddle. We let moments happen naturally.

That’s how we get photos that actually feel like your family.

Not forced. Not stiff. Not weirdly formal like you’re announcing a royal engagement.

Just honest.

Just yours.

Final Thoughts

Family photos are not about perfect children.

They are about preserving this season exactly as it is.

The messy bits. The sweet bits. The chaos. The calm. The tiny hands and big personalities.

That is what matters.

Years from now, you will not care if your toddler sat still for three minutes.

You will care that you remembered what it felt like.

That’s the whole point.
