Maternity Photos: When Should You Book and What Should You Expect?
A Bathurst Maternity Photographer’s Guide to Relaxed, Natural Maternity Sessions
Pregnancy is one of those seasons that somehow feels both incredibly long… and over in five minutes.
One minute you’re staring at two pink lines wondering what just happened.
The next, you’re 32 weeks pregnant, living on snacks, trying to roll out of bed like it’s an Olympic event, and people keep asking if the nursery is finished.
Rude.
Somewhere in the middle of all of that, maternity photos come up.
And one of the biggest questions I get is:
“When should I actually book maternity photos?”
Short answer?
Earlier than you think.
Because the sweet spot matters, and waiting too long can turn your dreamy maternity session into a very personal hostage situation involving swollen ankles and emotional support snacks.
As a maternity photographer in Bathurst and across Central West NSW, my goal is simple:
Create maternity photos that feel soft, natural, connected, and like this chapter of your life—not stiff posing and awkward hand placement while everyone pretends pregnancy is glamorous 24/7.
Let’s talk about when to book, what to expect, and how to make your maternity session feel easy.
When Should You Book Maternity Photos?
The best time for maternity photos is usually between:
28 to 34 Weeks Pregnant
This is the sweet spot for most mums.
By this stage:
your bump is beautifully visible
you’re usually still comfortable enough to move around
walking, standing, and golden hour sessions still feel manageable
you’re less likely to feel exhausted or over it (emotionally and physically)
After 34–36 weeks, things can start feeling a little less magical and a little more “please do not ask me to stand up again.”
Especially in summer.
Especially in Australia.
Especially when shoes become a personal enemy.
Booking earlier gives us more flexibility and avoids last-minute stress if baby decides to start writing their own schedule.
Because they do that.
Often.
When Should You Actually Enquire?
Honestly?
As soon as you hit your second trimester is ideal.
Especially if you’re hoping for:
golden hour outdoor sessions
weekend availability
a specific month or season
partner or family involvement
newborn photos afterwards too
The earlier you enquire, the easier it is to secure a date that works best for you.
Not just the leftovers.
We like options.
Outdoor vs In-Home Maternity Sessions
Both are beautiful.
Both feel completely different.
It really depends on what feels most like you.
Outdoor Maternity Sessions
These are perfect if you love:
soft golden light
earthy, natural tones
open space
movement
romantic sunset vibes

Outdoor sessions feel timeless, warm, and relaxed.
Especially if you love that documentary-style, candid feeling.
Very “we went for a walk and accidentally looked amazing.”
In-Home Maternity Sessions
These are beautiful if you love:
privacy
comfort
a slower pace
personal storytelling
cosy intimate moments
In-home sessions feel deeply personal because they happen where life is actually happening.
Especially if this is your first baby and your home is full of little preparations and quiet anticipation.
Or if you simply do not want to leave the house.
Completely valid.
Honestly iconic.
Can My Partner and Kids Be Included?
Please.
Yes.
Absolutely.
I always encourage this.
Because maternity photos are not just about the bump.
They are about the people waiting to meet this little person.
Your partner.Your toddlers.Your growing family.Your dog who thinks this is somehow about them.
This season belongs to all of you.
And those connection-filled images are often the most meaningful ones in your gallery.
Not just the solo portraits.
What Should You Wear for Maternity Photos?
The answer is not:
“Whatever still fits and doesn’t make me cry.”
Although emotionally… valid.
The best maternity outfits are:
comfortable
soft and easy to move in
flattering around the bump
something that feels like you
Flowy dresses photograph beautifully, but fitted pieces can also look incredible depending on your style.
Neutral tones tend to photograph timelessly and keep the focus on connection rather than distraction.
Most importantly:
Wear something you feel good in.
Confidence photographs better than trends.
Every time.
And yes—I help with outfit planning.
Because nobody needs extra decision fatigue at 31 weeks pregnant.
What Happens During the Session?
This is where I need to say:
You do not need to know how to pose.
Please release that burden immediately.
You are growing a human. That is enough.
My sessions are relaxed and prompt-based.
That means:
movement instead of stiff posing
gentle guidance instead of awkward “what do I do with my hands?” panic
connection over perfection
We walk.We pause.We laugh.We breathe.
I guide the whole thing.
You are not expected to show up with model energy.
Frankly, I’d be suspicious if you did.
Why Maternity Photos Matter More Later
This part sneaks up on people.
During pregnancy, it can feel like:
“I just want this baby out of my body.”
Fair.
But later?
You realise how quickly that season disappears.
The kicks. The waiting. The anticipation. The quiet before life changes forever.
That chapter deserves to be remembered too.
Not just the newborn stage.
Maternity photos become a reminder of where it all started.
And years later, they matter in ways people never expect.
Final Thoughts
There is no perfect way to do maternity photos.
Only your way.
Soft and quiet.Wild toddler included.Barefoot in a field. At home on the couch.Sunset golden hour.Cosy and slow.
It all works.
Because the goal is not perfection.
It is remembering.
This season. This waiting. This version of you.
That’s the magic.
