Bringing home a new baby is one of the most exciting, emotional and exhausting seasons of life.

Between feeding schedules, sleepless nights and adjusting to life as a family, the thought of organising newborn photos can sometimes feel overwhelming.

As a Bathurst newborn photographer, I get asked many of the same questions by new parents before every session.

So I thought I'd answer the most common ones here to help you feel prepared and confident before your newborn session.

When Should I Book My Newborn Session?

The best time to book your newborn session is during pregnancy.

This allows me to reserve space around your due date and ensures availability once your little one arrives.

Don't worry if baby arrives earlier or later than expected.

Once your baby is born, we'll simply lock in a date that works for everyone.

If your baby has already arrived, it's still worth reaching out as I occasionally have last-minute availability.

How Old Should My Baby Be For Newborn Photos?

One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that photos need to happen within the first week.

While those early days are beautiful, lifestyle newborn photography is much more flexible.

Most of my newborn sessions take place within the first two to six weeks after birth.

This gives families time to settle in while still capturing those tiny newborn features.

And honestly?

Some parents simply aren't ready for visitors during the first week, and that's completely okay.

What If My Baby Cries During The Session?

Your baby is a baby.

Crying is completely normal.

Every newborn session includes plenty of time for:

  • Feeding

  • Changing

  • Settling

  • Cuddles

  • Comfort breaks

There is absolutely no pressure to rush.

Some babies sleep the entire session.

Some babies stay awake.

Some babies want extra cuddles.

Every session unfolds differently and that's perfectly normal.

What Should My Baby Wear?

Simple is usually best.

Neutral colours, soft textures and minimal patterns photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby.

For many sessions, babies spend part of the time wrapped, swaddled or simply dressed in a simple onesie.

I always encourage parents to choose outfits that feel timeless rather than overly trendy.

The goal is creating images you'll still love decades from now.

What Should Parents Wear?

I recommend soft, neutral and earthy tones.

Creams, whites, beige, soft greens, rust tones and warm neutrals tend to photograph beautifully.

Avoid large logos, bright graphics and busy patterns where possible.

Most importantly, wear something comfortable.

If you feel good, you'll look good.

Can Siblings Be Included?

Absolutely.

In fact, some of my favourite images come from older siblings meeting and interacting with their new baby brother or sister.

Sometimes siblings are excited.

Sometimes they're shy.

Sometimes they're more interested in snacks than photos.

Whatever happens, we'll work with it.

There's no expectation for children to sit perfectly still or smile on command.

Do You Use Props?

My approach to newborn photography is natural and lifestyle-focused.

Rather than heavily posed studio-style setups, I focus on connection and storytelling.

That means capturing:

  • Tiny fingers and toes

  • Family cuddles

  • Nursery details

  • Feeding moments

  • Genuine interactions

Simple wraps, blankets and baskets may occasionally be used, but the focus is always on your family and your connection.

Where Do Newborn Sessions Take Place?

Most of my newborn sessions take place in the comfort of your own home.

This allows everyone to relax in a familiar environment and removes the stress of packing up and travelling with a newborn.

Your home doesn't need to look perfect.

I promise.

All we need is good natural light and the people who matter most.

What If My House Isn't Pinterest Perfect?

This is probably one of the most common concerns I hear.

And the answer is simple:

It doesn't matter.

I am looking for light, connection and moments.

Not perfectly styled homes.

Most of the time we only use one or two rooms with the best natural light available.

Your baby won't care if there are dishes in the sink one day.

Neither will you when you're looking back at these photos in twenty years.

Why Book A Newborn Session?

Because this season passes incredibly quickly.

The tiny fingers.

The sleepy stretches.

The milk-drunk smiles.

The way they fit perfectly in your arms.

Before you know it, they'll be sitting, walking and heading off to school.

Photographs allow you to hold onto these moments long after they've passed.

Looking For A Bathurst Newborn Photographer?

If you're expecting a baby or have recently welcomed a little one into your family, I'd love to help document this chapter of your story.

Based in Bathurst and photographing families throughout the Central West NSW, my newborn sessions are relaxed, natural and focused on genuine connection rather than perfect poses.

Because these early days may feel long sometimes...

But they really do go by far too quickly. 🤍
