What Actually Happens During A Couples Session?

One of the most common things I hear from couples before their session is:

"We're awkward in front of the camera."

Closely followed by:

"We have absolutely no idea what to do."

If that sounds like you, you're definitely not alone.

The truth is, most of the couples you see on my website and social media aren't professional models. They're everyday people who felt exactly the same way before their session started.

The good news?

You don't need modelling experience, perfect poses or even confidence in front of the camera to create beautiful images.

As a couples photographer in Bathurst, my job is to guide you through the entire experience so it feels relaxed, natural and genuinely enjoyable.

You Don't Need To Know How To Pose

One of the biggest misconceptions about couples photography is that you need to know what you're doing.

You don't.

I provide direction throughout the entire session.

Rather than placing you into stiff poses and asking you to stare at the camera, I'll guide you through simple prompts that encourage genuine interaction.

We'll walk.

We'll chat.

We'll joke around.

You'll probably end up laughing more than you expected.

Before long, most couples completely forget there's a camera involved.

The Session Feels More Like A Date Than A Photoshoot

This is honestly one of the biggest compliments I receive from couples after their gallery is delivered.

Many people expect a couples session to feel awkward or overly posed.

Instead, most sessions feel more like spending an hour together without the distractions of everyday life.

No phones.

No work.

No notifications.

Just the two of you spending time together while I document it.

Some couples walk hand in hand through a paddock.

Some sit and talk while watching the sunset.

Some spend the entire session laughing at each other.

Every session is slightly different because every relationship is different.

What If My Partner Hates Having Photos Taken?

This is probably the second most common concern I hear.

Usually one person is excited.

The other person is attending because they love the first person.

And honestly?

That's completely normal.

My goal isn't to force anyone into awkward poses or fake moments.

Instead, I focus on creating movement and conversation.

Most reluctant partners relax within the first ten minutes once they realise they're not being asked to stand stiffly and smile at the camera for an hour.

By the end of the session they're often the ones suggesting ideas.

What Should We Wear?

When planning your couples session, I always recommend choosing outfits that feel like an elevated version of yourselves.

Think coordinated rather than matching.

Neutral tones, earthy colours and textured fabrics tend to photograph beautifully and complement the natural landscapes around Bathurst and the Central West.

Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable and confident in.

If you're uncomfortable, it will show.

If you feel great, it will show too.

The Best Photos Happen In The In-Between Moments

Some of my favourite images are never the ones that were planned.

They're the moments in between.

The way you look at each other when you think nobody is watching.

The little forehead kisses.

The spontaneous laughter.

The hand squeezes.

The quiet moments.

Those tiny interactions tell your story far better than any perfectly posed photograph ever could.

That's why I focus on connection first and posing second.

Why Book A Couples Session?

Couples sessions aren't just for engagements.

They're a chance to document your relationship exactly as it is right now.

Whether you've been together six months or ten years, photographs become more valuable as time passes.

Many couples book sessions to celebrate:

  • Engagements

  • Anniversaries

  • New homes

  • Pregnancy announcements

  • Milestone birthdays

  • Or simply because they haven't had professional photos together before

You don't need a special reason.

Sometimes preserving this chapter of life is reason enough.

Whether you're celebrating an engagement, planning a surprise proposal or simply wanting beautiful photos together, my goal is to create images that feel authentic to your relationship.

No awkward posing.

No pressure.

Just real moments and memories you'll love looking back on for years to come. 🤍
