One of the biggest concerns parents have before booking a family photo session is whether their children will cooperate.
As a Bathurst family photographer, I hear it all the time:
"My toddler never sits still."
"My kids are absolutely wild."
"I don't think they'll even look at the camera."
And honestly?
That's completely okay.
In fact, some of my favourite family photos have happened when children were doing exactly what children are supposed to do. Exploring. Laughing. Collecting sticks. Chasing bugs. Asking a thousand questions. Running off to investigate something they've spotted in the distance.
Because years from now, those are often the moments parents remember most.
The Best Family Photos Happen Between The Poses
When most people think about family photos, they picture everyone standing perfectly still, smiling at the camera and hoping the kids cooperate long enough to get "the shot."
The reality is that some of the most meaningful images happen in between those moments.
A little hand reaching for Mum's.
Dad carrying a tired toddler on his shoulders.
A child proudly showing off a stick they found.
A family laughing together because something didn't quite go to plan.
As a family photographer in Bathurst, my goal isn't to force your children into perfect poses. It's to create an environment where genuine moments can happen naturally.
What If My Child Doesn't Want Photos?
Believe it or not, this happens more often than you think.
Recently I photographed a little boy who really wasn't interested in having his photo taken.
He was tired, wanted cuddles with Mum and had absolutely zero interest in standing still for the camera.
So instead of fighting it, we worked with it.
We explored.
We looked for bugs.
We smashed mushrooms with sticks.
We talked about monster trucks.
We stopped for plenty of cuddles.
And the result?
A gallery full of genuine moments that reflected exactly who he was at that stage of life.
No forced smiles.
No tears.
Just real memories.
My Approach To Family Photography
My sessions are designed to feel relaxed, fun and easy.
There is absolutely some gentle direction and prompting, but I don't expect children to perform for an hour.
Instead, I encourage families to interact with each other naturally.
We'll walk.
We'll chat.
We'll play games.
We'll cuddle.
We'll explore.
Before long, most kids completely forget there's a camera involved.
That's when the magic happens.
As a Bathurst family photographer, I want your gallery to feel like your family. Not a version of your family that spent an hour being told to smile.
You Don't Need Perfect Behaviour For Beautiful Photos
One of the biggest misconceptions about family photography is that children need to behave perfectly for great photos.
They don't.
Children are curious.
They're energetic.
They're emotional.
They're unpredictable.
And that's exactly what makes them wonderful to photograph.
Some of the most beautiful images come from the in-between moments. The cuddles, the giggles, the quiet connections and the little personality traits you'll miss one day.
Those moments matter far more than perfect smiles.
